Growing Wheat For A Family Of Four
This is on the top of my list this spring.
I want to grow wheat and make my own flour for my family of four!
I have wanted to do this for years and now I am a point in my life that it just makes sense. I have been making bread twice a week now for over 2 months ever since the price of my favourite brand went up to over $4.00 a loaf. I nearly had a temper tantrum right there in the bakery…
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!!!!!
To tell you the truth I am actually LOVING my new ritual. On Wednesday’s I make whatever kind of bread that suits my fancy, whether it be a simple whole wheat loaf or a french bread and on Sundays I take the sour dough starter out of my fridge, feed it and take half to make the weekly loaf (which I LOVE as toast).
It makes me feel confident and connected.
It takes most of the afternoon to make it, but it never wastes my time, as the actual “creation” only takes a couple of minutes and the rest of the time it’s just “resting” and rising…I’m free to do whatever I please.
THEN
The price of wheat started going up. $8 for 5KG…
ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!
This got me thinking….about these.
Hmmmm… if I plant them this spring for the same cost of 5kg of flour….I could have as much grain as I needed to feed my family for months!
Will it be a lot of work?
Not any more than my veggie garden.
I will have fun on a windy day removing the chaff and then I will store it until ready to use. I could use it whole as a cooked grain or I could buy myself a grain mill and use it to make my breads.
WELL… That’s the plan anyway.
I’ll let you know how it goes!

I am going to be super excited to follow your progress! One of my favourite books as a little girl is Chicken Little
I haven’t made bread in ages but will live vicariously through you on your lovely farm baking bread. LOVE this!
Lyndsay I believe we are kindred spirits!!
